I acquired this 2002 Ford Mustang back in 2017 from a former co-worker, shelling out $1,400.00 CAD for it. At the time, I was earning close to minimum wage, making this a significant investment and my second owned vehicle. Owning a Mustang had always been a childhood dream of mine, so getting behind the wheel for the first time was like a dream come true.
When I bought it, the car needed new brakes but was otherwise in good shape. It was a bone-stock V6 with an automatic transmission. My first set of modifications were pretty basic, including a new radio, speakers, and a subwoofer. From there, I moved on to more substantial changes. I installed polyurethane bushings for all the suspension components, relocated the battery to the trunk for better weight distribution, and swapped out the original 7.5-inch rear axle assembly for a fully built 8.8-inch version. The new rear end features 3.73 gearing, 31-spline axles, and a Detroit Locker differential.
One memorable moment came when I was 19 and driving to Walmart. As I waited at a stoplight, my exhaust suddenly erupted into a roar; I had developed an exhaust leak. Realizing that the entire exhaust system needed replacing, I seized the opportunity to install 2.5-inch straight pipes from front to back, completely eliminating the muffler. While this modification certainly makes for a fun drive, it does come with the side effect of occasional temporary tinnitus.
Transitioning to a T5 manual transmission was a labor-intensive task that took about eight months. This involved meticulously figuring out which parts I needed, sourcing them, and then finding a mechanic willing to undertake the project. On the aesthetic front, I invested in some real carbon fiber interior elements and installed a Dukes of Hazzard-style dixie horn. I've also deleted the rear seats and installed Eibach sway bars in both the front and rear, coupled with front billet sway bar mounts.
Looking ahead, my long-term vision for this Mustang involves swapping in a 2JZ-GTE engine and a Tremec T56 transmission. My goal is to transform it into a top-speed performer, inspired by none other than Smokey Nagata.
